For most of my professional career thus far, I’ve been lucky enough to work for companies with a fairly casual dress code, which is great for several reasons. While I have no opposition to dressing up for work, it’s the structure and limitations found in most formal dress codes that I’ve always struggled with.
I love tailored slacks, a good blazer, and a dressy blouse as individual pieces, but when paired together, I often feel as if I look a bit too formal. Mixing business with casual on the other hand is something I absolutely love to do. I realize that a distressed jean is not something that will pass in every office, but for those who do have the freedom to dress outside the corporate fashion realm, it can be nice to strike a balance between both worlds, bringing a bit of your own personal flair into the mix.
Do you work in an office with a strict dress code? I find that it usually just boils down to the career itself, but I also see a big difference in New York now, compared to my time working in Los Angeles, where it didn’t seem to matter what the profession was, as almost everyone embraced casual work wear to the fullest!
